WHY NATURAL CLEANING?

IN HOME POLLUTION:

*Americans, on average, spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, where the concentrations of some pollutants are often 2-5 times higher then typical outdoor concentrations.

*Cleaning supplies, paints, insecticides, and other commonly used products introduce many different chemicals, including volatile organic compounds, directly into the indoor air.

*Many of the chemicals and synthetic fragrances found in conventional cleaning products contain allergens or irritants.  Formaldehyde, choline, and chlorine compounds, glutaraldehyde, and other common ingredients used in cleaners can cause respiratory or sinus irritation if exposed to them, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

CARBON FOOTPRINT:

*The dangerous chemicals found in regular cleaners can damage our environment, like alkyl phenol ethoxylates, a surfactant that can cause "adverse reproductive effects of the types seen in wildlife exposed to polluted waters," according to the EPA.

*As an alternative, the EPA recommends choosing cleaning product that are biodegradable, low in toxicity, low in lifecycle energy consumption, low volatile organic compounds, and that use less packaging.

PET FRIENDLY:

*According to the EPA, exposure to certain ingredients in everyday cleaning products can lead to skin irritation and other cancers.  Some ingredients to watch out for on product labels include:  1).  Formaldehyde is found in many household cleaners and can irritate the skin and cause skin problems, as well as exacerbate eye, nose, and throat irritation and allergic responses.  2). Chlorine Bleach is also a common chemically reactive ingredient in cleaners and disinfectants, and can be corrosive to the skin or eyes.  It can also irritate the lungs.
